Key guidelines:

  • Concise and meaningful - Alt text should be concise, ideally under 150 characters, but can be longer if needed to convey essential information
  • End with a period - Proper punctuation for screen readers
  • Avoid "image of" or "photo of" - Get straight to the description
  • Describe within context - Consider what's relevant for the University at Buffalo website audience (students, faculty, staff, visitors)
  • Focus on key elements - People, location, activities without overwhelming detail
  • Color only when important - Only mention color if it's essential to understanding the image and context
  • Don't assume roles - Don't label someone as "student," "faculty," or "staff" unless absolutely clear from context (uniform, name tag, setting)
  • Respectful descriptions - Avoid describing race, gender, or sexual identity unless 100% certain and essential
  • 3 options provided - Recommended (balanced), More descriptive (additional detail), and Less descriptive (concise)
